Description
- Paniakhia, locally known in Odisha as one of the traditional brackish-water fish species, is scientifically referred to as Megalops cyprinoides, commonly called the Oxeye Herring or marine tarpon. It is a species of fish that inhabits estuaries, lagoons, and brackish water systems, particularly in coastal regions of India, including the famous Chilika Lake, Bhitarakanika, and other tidal wetlands. The name “Paniakhia” in Odia loosely translates to “fish that lives in water” but is used specifically for this species due to its prevalence and importance in local fisheries.
- Paniakhia holds significant economic and cultural value in Odisha. Traditionally, it has been a staple in local diets, often cooked as a curry, fried, or smoked. Beyond its culinary role, it is a source of livelihood for local fishers, especially in communities surrounding Chilika Lake and other estuarine zones. Its seasonal availability makes it a sought-after species in local fish markets, and it contributes to the region’s cultural identity as a traditional coastal food source.
